Apple Crumble – A Perfect Dessert
Apple Crumble {also known as Apple Crisp} is a classic dessert loved by the majority, if not all people who have ever tasted it. And my family is no different: Apple Crumble must be one of the top 3 favourite fruit desserts in our house. I often make it just for the 4 of us. However, I also prepare it when we have guests, as its simplicity is inversely proportional to its deliciousness. That is why you can never go wrong if you choose to serve it for pudding. But what also makes Apple Crumble a perfect dessert is the ease of preparation and very simple ingredients needed.
Aromatic Apple Filling
Apples are obviously the key ingredients. You can use cooking apples, but in truth, any type will work as long as you are okay with either a mushier or chunkier apple filling. Also, if you choose tart apple, you may need to add more sugar. But when I use sweet apples, I entirely omit the sugar in the apple mixture.
However, cinnamon, for me, is a necessary ingredient in apple filling. One teaspoon ground cinnamon ensures the dessert {as well as your whole house!} will smell beautiful. You may also add some cloves to your apple dessert for some extra flavor.Â
Apple Crumble Topping Ingredients
The apple crumble topping requires only three simple ingredients: sugar, flour and butter. But nothing is stopping you from being creative or even adventures with them. So you could use any sugar you like or currently have at home, including brown sugar or granulated sugar.
Although I love a rich, buttery crumble, I replace butter with coconut oil when I make it for vegans. The texture will be a bit different, but the crumb topping will be still delicious.Â
When it comes to flour, there are many different options. In the Apple Crumble recipe below, apart from all-purpose flour, I also use almond meal. But you could also add some oats or other ground or chopped nuts. Alternatively, if you are on a gluten-free diet, use a gluten-free flour mixture in place of the plain one. {If you look for a recipe for a vegan and gluten-free crumble, please click here}.
Delicious Crumb Topping
My love for crumbles dates back to my childhood. My Grandma often baked yeast cakes with seasonal fruit and crumble on top. And I used to pinch from them the biggest crumble pieces when the cake came out from the oven. I have to admit that I also used to do it even before the cake was baked! And” the biggest piece of crumble” is a key word here. When I prepare this yummy pudding, I make sure I have coarse crumbs. So if after processing the crumble, I don’t end up with the desired size; I just manually put together smaller pieces of the crumb mixture.
How to Serve Apple Crumble
Having Apple Crumble without any additions is already a wonderful experience. However, if you do not count calories, enjoy it with fresh cream {double is the best ;)}, custard or vanilla ice cream. Whichever way of serving you choose, I am positive this delicious crumble will satisfy your sweet tooth.

Great to see gluten free options.
This specific recipe is not gluten-free, but some other ones on my blog are GF. I personally can have gluten, but I know more and more people who either are not allowed to have it or choose to avoid it. So, keeping them in mind, I add GF recipes 🙂
